What is answer-first structure (NO_ANSWER_FIRST)?
Answer-first structure places a direct, concrete answer in the first sentence of a passage — the first sentence must be declarative, non-anaphoric, hedge-free, and contain at least 1 fact token (digit, percent, unit, or 4-digit year). Princeton GEO research (KDD 2024) identifies it as 1 of 6 core AEO levers; Seeklyn fires NO_ANSWER_FIRST when sentence 0 fails any of these 4 conditions.

What is answer-first structure?
Answer-first structure is the practice of opening every passage with a sentence that directly states the answer — before any context, caveats, or framing. Princeton's GEO research (KDD 2024) identified it as 1 of 6 AEO levers that correlate with being cited by AI answer engines. A sentence that buries the key fact after 2 sentences of setup will often be passed over: the first sentence is what the engine reads to decide relevance, and a vague opener fails that test.
The inverted-pyramid model from journalism is structurally the same: conclusion first, supporting detail after. AEO answer-first goes one step further — the opener must also carry a concrete fact, not just state the conclusion abstractly. "Content marketing is important for SEO" is declarative but carries no fact; "Content marketing drives 3× more leads per dollar than paid search (HubSpot, 2024)" is both declarative and fact-bearing.
How does Seeklyn detect a missing answer-first opener?
Seeklyn's answersFirst() function checks the sentence at position 0 against 4 conditions. The sentence must not end in "?" (not a question), must not open with any of the 8 anaphoraOpeners (not anaphoric), must not contain a hedge word from the 6-word hedge list (not hedged), and must contain at least 1 fact token — a digit, a percent symbol, a measurement unit, or a 4-digit year. If any condition fails, NO_ANSWER_FIRST fires on pos==0.
NO_ANSWER_FIRST is 1 of 2 structural flags (with ANAPHORA_OPEN) that set self-contained = false and add the heaviest weight penalty to the 0–100 citability score. A passage that opens with "Content marketing is an important part of modern SEO strategy" has no fact token, so it fires NO_ANSWER_FIRST even though the sentence is declarative and non-anaphoric.
How to write an answer-first opener
Lead with a direct declarative sentence that contains a concrete datum. Before: "Content marketing is an important part of modern SEO strategy." After: "Content marketing drives 3× more leads per dollar than paid search, according to HubSpot 2024." The revision is declarative, non-anaphoric, hedge-free, and carries a fact token (the "3×" ratio and the year 2024 both qualify).
A useful rule: read the first sentence in isolation. If someone encountering it without context can extract a specific, useful fact, it passes. If it requires reading the rest of the section to understand what "important" or "effective" means, it fails. Replace qualitative openers with quantified ones whenever evidence supports the claim.
Frequently asked questions
Must every section opener contain a number?
Not exactly — a fact token includes digits, percents, years (4-digit), and $ values. A year like 2024 counts. Named entities alone do not satisfy the fact-token requirement; a sentence like "Google confirmed this policy" is declarative but fires NO_ANSWER_FIRST because it carries no numeric or unit-bearing fact.
What if my passage has no concrete facts?
Then it will also fire LOW_FACT_DENSITY in addition to possibly NO_ANSWER_FIRST. Both flags reduce citability, but they are separate: answer-first is about sentence structure at position 0, fact-density is about the whole passage. A passage can clear NO_ANSWER_FIRST with a strong opening fact and still score low if the rest of the passage is opinion-heavy.
Is answer-first the same as the inverted pyramid?
Structurally yes — both put the conclusion first. AEO answer-first goes further: the opener must also carry a concrete fact, not just state the conclusion abstractly. Saying "Structured data is beneficial" passes the inverted-pyramid test but fires NO_ANSWER_FIRST in Seeklyn because it contains no fact token.
How much does NO_ANSWER_FIRST reduce the citability score?
NO_ANSWER_FIRST is a high-severity flag (alongside ANAPHORA_OPEN) and is 1 of 2 structural flags that also flip the self-contained badge to false. Its weight in the citability score is the largest of all 8 flags — clearing it alone typically raises the score by more than clearing any of the 6 moderate flags.
