What is LLM visibility?
LLM visibility is the sum of 2 layers: retrievability (whether the engine's index surfaces your page) and citability (whether your passages are structured to be lifted as standalone answers). LLM-powered engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — cite content that clears both layers; Seeklyn measures visibility from the actual AI answers and citations, tracked in real time, and labels any forecast as inferred.

What does LLM visibility measure?
LLM visibility measures how likely it is that an LLM-powered answer engine selects your content as a cited source when a user asks a question your content could answer. 4 engines currently dominate the answer landscape: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google), Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Each runs a 2-step process — retrieve candidate passages from an index, then generate a grounded answer with citations. LLM visibility is your footprint across both steps.
Visibility is not binary. A page can be fully retrievable but never cited because its passages are too generic, too long, or hedged rather than declarative. A page can be brilliantly structured for citability but never surface in retrieval because it lacks the keyword coverage and BM25 relevance the engine's retrieval layer needs. High LLM visibility requires both.
How is LLM visibility different from traditional SEO visibility?
Traditional SEO visibility is a page-level metric: rank 1 on Google for a keyword. LLM visibility is a passage-level metric: is a specific 100–300-word block of your content being extracted and cited as a source? The 2 disciplines share fundamentals — clear structure, accurate facts, crawlable pages — but diverge on the unit of measurement and the win condition.
SEO earns a ranked link that a human clicks. LLM visibility earns a citation that the engine surfaces in its own prose — the user may never visit your page at all. Ahrefs (2026) reports that AI answer traffic already represents a material share of informational queries, with that share growing. Measuring both SEO rank and LLM visibility is the practical response to that shift.
| Dimension | SEO visibility | LLM visibility |
|---|---|---|
| Unit optimized | Page / ranked link | Passage / cited source block |
| Win condition | Rank high enough to earn the click | Be extracted as a cited answer fragment |
| Measured at | Page level (keyword → URL) | Passage level (query → 100–300-word block) |
| Primary engines | Google, Bing organic results | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews |
| Measurement method | Rank tracking tools | Observed citations + inferred likelihood bands |
How does Seeklyn measure LLM visibility?
Seeklyn measures LLM visibility through 2 complementary paths: observed answers and inferred likelihoods. Observed checks read the actual AI answers and their actual citations, tracked in real time across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and more, and report whether your page was named or cited for a query. These results are labeled "ai_answer" and are direct measurements.
Inferred likelihoods are forecasts: a 0–1 score from 4 signals, retrieval rank (45%), fan-out coverage (25%), citability (20%) and competition density (10%), that estimates how likely a page is to be cited before or between checks. Results are always labeled "inferred" — the honesty principle requires that inference is never dressed as observation.
Seeklyn's content analysis layer — the passage-level citability score, the 8 extractability flags, the AEO signal suite — is the toolkit for improving both inputs to LLM visibility. Better passage structure raises citability; better keyword and entity coverage raises retrieval rank.
What are the levers for improving LLM visibility?
2 levers control LLM visibility: retrievability and citability. Retrievability means your page surfaces in the engine's retrieval layer for the queries that matter — improved by BM25-relevant keyword coverage, comprehensive fan-out coverage of sub-queries, and passing crawl gates (no noindex, no AI-crawler blocks). Citability means your passages are structured to be lifted as standalone answers — improved by answer-first openings, concrete facts per 100 words, named entities, and source attribution.
The fastest gains typically come from fixing structural citability gaps on pages that are already retrievable. If a page ranks in organic search (retrieval is working) but is never cited in AI answers, the gap is almost always in passage structure — anaphoric openings, hedged claims, or passages too long to extract cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Can Seeklyn guarantee LLM visibility after I apply its recommendations?
No. Seeklyn measures the signals that correlate with being cited and labels inferred likelihoods honestly as inferences, not guarantees. AI engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) control their own retrieval and citation ranking — no third-party tool can guarantee placement. What Seeklyn can do is identify the specific structural gaps most likely to cost you a citation and prioritize them by evidence grade.
Is LLM visibility the same as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
LLM visibility is the outcome GEO is trying to improve. GEO (also called AEO) is the set of practices — passage structure, fact density, entity coverage — that raise the probability of being cited by a generative AI engine. LLM visibility is the measurable result of those practices: your actual citation rate or likelihood band across observed and inferred engine checks.
Why does LLM visibility require both retrieval and citability?
Because citation is a 2-gate process: an engine must first retrieve your page as a candidate, then judge it citable enough to include in its answer. Failing the retrieval gate means the engine never considers your content, regardless of quality. Failing the citability gate means the engine considered but rejected your content as an answer source. Both gates must pass for a citation to occur — which is why Seeklyn's likelihood formula weights retrieval rank at 45% (the first gate) alongside citability at 20% (the second gate).
How many AI engines does Seeklyn currently track for LLM visibility?
Seeklyn tracks the actual AI answers and citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and more, including Gemini and Claude. Each engine is reported separately, and the engine list is designed to expand as new answer engines matter.
