Am I cited?

What is a brand mention in an AI answer?

Seeklyn tracks 4 brand-visibility states per engine check: cited + mentioned, cited only, mentioned only, and neither. A brand mention fires when an AI engine names your brand in its answer text — either the full domain ("seeklyn.com") or the bare brand label ("Seeklyn"), case-insensitive — without a formal citation link.

Brand mention appears as a separate signal in the "Am I Cited?" engine results — run a check free at /dashboard/cited.

How does Seeklyn detect a brand mention?

Seeklyn checks the answer text produced by each engine (the Mentioned field in EngineResult) for 2 brand forms: the full normalized domain (e.g. "seeklyn.com") and the bare label extracted from the domain (e.g. "seeklyn"), both matched case-insensitively. If either appears as a substring of the answer text, the Mentioned flag is set to true for that engine.

The check looks at the answer text string — the engine's synthesized prose — not at the list of cited references. A brand mentioned in the AI answer body but not linked as a source will be detected. Conversely, a page that is cited in the reference list but not named in the prose will show Cited = true, Mentioned = false.

Detection uses substring matching rather than word-boundary matching. The bare-label check is intentionally broad: it catches "Seeklyn's analysis" and "according to Seeklyn" as well as the domain form. Very short bare labels (one-character TLDs stripped) may match unintended words — review low-confidence mentions manually.

Is a brand mention as valuable as a citation?

A brand mention is weaker than a formal citation but is real visibility: the engine recognizes your brand and associates it with the query topic in its answer text, even without a formal source link.

Seeklyn shows a "Mentioned only" result as actionable because the engine clearly already knows your brand and associates it with the query topic, but is not citing your specific pages as sources. The gap is usually a citability problem — content not structured to be lifted as a standalone cited answer.

Which engines can produce a brand mention?

Every AI answer engine Seeklyn tracks produces answer text for the Mentioned check: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and more each generate synthesized prose where a brand can be named inline. Seeklyn scans the actual answer text, so a mention is something the engine really wrote.

Inferred results (citation-likelihood forecasts) have no answer text to scan, so the Mentioned signal only ever comes from actual AI answers.

Frequently asked questions

Can a brand mention appear without any citation?

Yes. An AI engine can name your brand in prose — "according to Seeklyn, …" or "tools like Seeklyn …" — without formally citing a specific URL. This is the "Mentioned only" state. It is a positive signal (the engine associates your brand with the topic) but weaker than a formal citation, which includes your URL in the source list.

How does Seeklyn identify my brand name?

Seeklyn extracts 2 forms from the domain you supply: the full normalized domain (e.g. "seeklyn.com") and the bare label before the first dot (e.g. "seeklyn"). Both are matched case-insensitively as substrings of the engine's answer text. You cannot currently supply a custom brand name; the detection is domain-derived.

Should I try to optimize specifically for brand mentions?

Brand mentions are a byproduct of broader AEO work, not a direct optimization target. The same practices that earn citations — self-contained passages, concrete facts, named entities — also increase the likelihood that an engine's synthesized answer names your brand. Chasing mentions independently (e.g. keyword-stuffing your brand name) can trigger extractability penalties. Focus on citability; mentions follow.

Does a brand mention count as a backlink for SEO purposes?

No. An AI engine naming your brand in its answer text is not a crawlable hyperlink and does not pass PageRank or link equity in the traditional SEO sense. It is a visibility signal for the AI answer layer — valuable for brand awareness and potentially influencing future training data, but not equivalent to a link in an organic search result.
